a birth story
11 years ago today i had, in the middle of the night, given birth to a 9 lb. 14 oz. boy child. this was done all in the comfort of my own home, but he took FOREVER to be born. we finally figured out when he was crowning, why. he had his hand on his forehead! OUCH! the whole birth part ended up being a bit scary....he immediately had to go to the midwife in the corner for oxygen in his face...he was a bit blue. for the 2 minutes (that felt like an hour) he was with her, i was a bit panicked! but, after some extra air, he was fine. i spent three weeks laying down. that boy tore me up. it's one of my favorite memories, though. my mom stayed with us, david was not working a job (the job he had was seasonal and it was the dead of winter), my friends kept us fed. we sat around, watched movies, bad tv shows and talked ALOT. lovely time.
i know life moves along at a fairly fast clip, but COME ON! i feel that it is speeding past me and i am doing all i can to keep up. in my exploration of traditional chinese medicine, i just read that the time after birth is called the golden month. for a month, the new mother is supposed to rest. family is there to take care of her while she heals. it is believed that even old health issues can be healed during this time...and new ones can arise if she is not cared for properly. i guess it helps that the chinese have the one child law...there aren't a bunch of other kids to worry about! anyway, i was just thinking about the speed of our culture. families are separated, older folks are relegated to nursing homes, new mothers are left to figure it all out on their own. in reading about this ancient tradition and process, it left me longing for something calmer. a quieter more meditative life. is it attainable? i truly hope so.

soapbox
i haven't voted since bush sr. . i think the year was 1992. i think i lived in wichita, kansas. i have since married a non-voting type. my husband has never voted and will never vote. he refuses to put his trust, time, energy and hope into washington. i agree with him, i think. i thought this year that because a woman was running that i might be interested. today i watched a debate between the two democratic candidates. i felt like i was watching jerry springer. i was waiting for the big bouncer guys to come out from the side. it left me a bit despairing. i mean, it was worse than my kids in the winter. mouthy, argumentative and bashing.
avery is studying ben franklin at the moment and today he had to write 5 rules for good manners.
1. do not pester
2. be nice
3. don't hurt feelings
4. ask God for help
5. do not sin
i'm thinkin those candidates could use some help from my son. it's hard to form a clear opinion about someone when you feel that everything they say is something to one up the other.
anyway...i'm still not sure if i'll vote. i'm not sure if it really means anything anymore.

ramblings
weekend: AMAZING. i forgot what a cool guy my husband is.
kids: ADORABLE. aidan is a mean basketball/skater/soccer/guitar boy. avery can whip up anything you like and more in the kitchen/loves soccer/is crazy creative/is SO like his pop.
cora has a killer smile/is extremely intuitive/loves soccer/is into animals/loves to play. isabel was a queen in her former life/has a better social life than me/loves to dance/is into washing dishes. elias is all boy...except when he wears isabels' tutu and dances with her/LOVES ALL sports/can stand on a skateboard (he's 2)/avoiding being the baby.....
house: i'm starting to bond with my house. i really want to feel at home here....since there's nowhere else we're going.
natural healing: i'm getting more and more into. i just read a book on traditional chinese healing that was extremely enlightening. how anyone can think that mind/body are separate is confusing to me. there is a woman doctor here in town who specializes in TCM. i'm wanting to get a complete physical (now that i'm 40, ya know). not that there's anything wrong....chinese medicine focuses on prevention. i just read that chinese doctors were not paid if their patient got sick! on a different note, my friend, krystal, has introduced me to the power of healing with essential oils. it is a really cool thing to find alternate ways of healing.
church: aidan decided big vineyard wasn't for him. too big, i think.
coffeeshop: david is working like crazy with not much pay. i'm baking and making soup. the coffee is amazing (part roaster/part barista). my friend sharon just hung her art there...it was awesome.
that's all i think. a small update. a happy new year letter.

long time
angie ferrell is my blog hero. she writes often. she's really funny, honest and to the point. i love it!
www.thedinwithin.blogspot.com.
i am so lame with the blogging thing! i start, i stop, i think about it and get distracted.
right now my 4 year old has BLARING christmas music on. BLARING. "it's the only thing I can dance to mama!". URG!
believe me, it's not hard to get distracted in this house.
my two year old was up most of the night throwing up. the problem with that, besides the throwing up part, is that at that age they really don't know how to throw up anywhere but wherever they want. it makes for a very messy, smelly bed. so today i'm doing laundry. lots and lots of laundry.
tommorow my lovely husband and i get to go to indianapolis for an overnighter! this hasn't happened in YEARS. we're going to hear 3 girls and their buddy. which is emmylou harris, patti griffin, shawn colvin and buddy miller. from what i hear it's AMAZING!!!
